17 best home laser hair removal devices of 2021

When it comes to hair removal at home, there are plenty of options. Whether your goal is smooth legs and pits or a full-fledged Brazilian, there are clippers, razors, and hair removal kits for the job. Unfortunately, these solutions are all temporary, which means you will come back to them a few days later.

If you are looking for more permanent results, there are a few options, including home laser hair removal devices. While it’s true a bit intimidating, New York-certified dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman says there are benefits to this DIY – they’re less expensive than in-office treatments and can be done on your own time. (especially good for anyone with a busy or unconventional schedule).

“While you will get best results with a professional laser hair removal machine in a doctor’s office, home devices certainly do the job, although most people will have to walk the areas multiple times,” Jaliman explains. They may also require follow-up maintenance if some stray strands come back, she explains.

However, not everyone should buy a home laser hair removal machine. “The device is best suited for patients with dark hair and lighter skin,” says Dr. Stacy Chimento, a board-certified dermatologist for Riverchase Dermatology in Miami. “Tanned or dark skin presents a risk of hypo or hyperpigmentation because the hair laser can confuse the darker skin pigment with the target, the hair follicle.”

It’s always wise to do a spot test before going ahead, especially if you have darker skin tone, Chimento says. And never treat freshly tanned (even self-tan!) Or sunburned skin, she says. It is also important to use extreme caution with potential skin irritants, such as retinoids, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid, before and after treatments.

Do you think you are ready to take on the task? Dermatologists say these machines deliver impressive before and after effects, effectively leaving your skin silky, smooth, and, of course, hairless.
